Playing with CNC3018 Laser Module

End switches on China CNC3018 installed (and working! Amazing thing!) now I can do auto homing, and make this thing less self-destructive.

Some weekends I spent riding my bike and exploring nice and beautiful Weinviertel, other ones I tried to set focus/distance/etc on laser…

I mean, the first time I installed laser and set some random distance and focus, everything worked flawlessly

But then I tried to do everything better, and everything went wrong. So, I need to tune these things again. Huh. Sad panda.

PCBs are here!

Precisely 2 weeks after order, boards are on my table. Quality, as always, very impressive.

Fun fact, 30 small boards cost less than 10 🙂

Stencil, solder paste, some sand and frying pan – and first PCB is ready!

After correcting some small issues

I noted, what I soldered the wrong microcontroller on! Hot air, a lot of flux, and it shining again.

Some checks:

Common mode choke (0805 size)

Placed some more parts, and FreeRTOS is running, LED is blinking, encoder is working and even PT6315 can turn on/off the LEDs.

Tried to get GPS working, but it somehow simply doesn’t want to work. For some seconds it was green, but then… I don’t know what to do.

I tried even to solder the antenna directly, corrected the battery charging diode (it was soldered in reverse polarity). It is cursed!

Still waiting

PCBs are still on the way (should arrive very soon). And I’ve completely forgotten to order parts! Digikey order placed. Hope package will depart before independence day.

More things happened offline. Extreme heat in the first half of week, not so hot and even cold next half.

At the commuting home suddenly rear shift leveler stopped working.

After a lot of finicky work I replaced the broken spring with one from old audio-player. And it works!

VFD driver ready to be ordered

I hope, this thing is ready (after many iterations and small improvements and also multiple new uploads to JLCPCB)…

  • Designed for FV651G display
  • Used PT6315 driver
  • SN6505 push-pull driver to generate 30Vdc anode voltage and 2.7Vac cathode voltage
  • Some LEDs and buttons
  • 3V3 LDO
  • FRAM
  • Oscillators
  • USB with filter
  • Header for 64 pins
  • Place for GPS board, nRF24L01+ and RTC unit D3231

And everything packed in 42x100mm 4-layer PCB

Some small PCBs to save on shipping, and ready to go.

Experimenting with SN6505

Last week I played a lot with SN6505 from TI… So much power in so small SOT23-6.

First and foremost, power source for VFD display (30VDC anode voltage, and ~2.5VAC for cathode)…

Small ring was too small, I used medium one (R 12.5/7.5/5 B64290L0044X087)
It works!

Efficiency at max current 95%! Amazing. Let’s try to get more power!
