Too much on my wish list.

I have a problem. When too many things come on my to-do list, I can’t decide what to do next. And then I do nothing. Not good 💩

I have learned something new. I found some discussions about landscape HP42s.

Problems:

  • 42s have six soft-keys. They should be somehow aligned with display. But display from “voyager” hardware is too small and can’t be pushed fully to the left.
  • Existing voyager displays have only one line. 42 has two. Also annunciators should be displayed.
  • Some people think, what landscape calculators are stupid. But fascinating. Personally I love them.

So, I think I can overcome these problems, I’ve found an interesting display, 132×32 pixels (original 42 has 131×16 + annunciators). So it would be enough to display up to 4 lines (e.g. XYZ+annunciators/time || soft-menu + XY + annunciators)

Also, I have found a very interesting OpenRPN project. Hopefully, I could combine some ideas from it.

Original 42 has 37 buttons. SwissMicros has +6 soft keys. Voyager series has 39 buttons available – so I have two buttons to spare.

I quickly adjusted one Free42 skin to see how it could look like:

CLS and R↑ buttons are added to this skin, I plan to replace R↑ with “42” button, which should be like “second shift”, and for Free42 configurations.

CLS may be replaced with SST→ & SST↑. (They will look quite logical in this configuration).

But still, my biggest problem: how to put the text on labels. It is hard to find something white to write on the black buttons. Any ideas?

PX15C

Yes. This is stuck in my head.

Okay. Someone named Paxer emulated(?) old (first in 1982) good HP15C calculator (he has also 16C & 41).

Someone posted translated repost on the habr.com, and it clicked: I want this!

Author made it exclusively in THT, but shared schematics and hex files! Amazing!

Now is my plan to do it as small as it possible; as close to the original, as possible…

Of course I started from designing “the nice HP keyboard”

I printed some keys, to test them. Clicks nice!

Then 3D design. A lot of design. Trying to do it as neat as I can.

Huh, renders looks nice. But placing everything will be really hard. Especially text! I spent too many hours, without any effect… I still have no ideas…

One more render with “opened” cover to access the battery/reset/programming…

It is still something magic when 3D sketches are embodied in reality…

First one – button enclosure. I finally pushed my PC back to the wall, so I needed to extend the power-on button. And done this. Very nice!

And finally this nice air assist for my CNC3018 laser cutter!

So, I need to burn some things now!

Oh, also visited some really net scale models shop. Nice shop, filled from bottom to the top, with good tips and tricks. Hoho, I’m looking forward to glue and painting some more models!

Long holidays almost gone

And what have I done? Spent a good time with family. Assembled and painted some models with son

Smallest one – matchbox-ready-thing. The red helicopter is an RC-controlled – advents calendar. Wooden plane – some easy click-and assembly thing (needed some glue, of course). Apache – Revell model with only minor extra painting job, and Boeing 787 – Zvezda model.

I also learned to use the airbrush… Cleaned it a lot. 😀 Still a lot to improve, I still didn’t master it as well as I wanted.

Books, books, books

I used to read all books in translation. Because I was afraid to not understand jokes or something important. I haven’t found the “Andy Weir – Project Hail Mary” translated, so I read it in English. And this was really amazing! I really hope to see it in the movie theater one day!

I’ve immediately re-read the “Martian” in English too, of course. So cool.

Blasted dust from the CNC3018, burned some plywood. 1/2 of the sheet was perfect, another half so-so. I’m pretty sure it depends on plywood quality & glue… I think CNC3018 needs some improvements, like air blasting the active zone…

Slowly coming back to electro-projects, found my kicad files channel selector for the home audio system. Still needs a lot of work, I hope to order this board soon…

Some off time from electronics

Way too many projects in my backlog. It is gone to this threshold when I don’t do any of them. Meh, but it happens…

So, let’s do other stuff. Like, you know, watching Scott Manley YT videos, reading books (some sci-fi, some work organization), watching TV series (“Sex Education” is amazing!)

Off time will give me the power to restart, and do really important and interesting things.
